Factors to Consider When Purchasing a Filtered Water Bottle

As you can see from our top-10 roundup, there are a lot of options to choose from. Some might even consider how many different features, filter types and sizes to be quite daunting.

Luckily for you, we have the experience and the answers to help you decide which is the best filtered water bottle for you. However, there are a few things to consider when deciding on filtering water bottle and the first thing you must ask yourself is this:

What Am I Using it For?

Each one of you will have a different reason you want to purchase a self-filtering water bottle. Some of you travel and would like to avoid pricy airport plastic water bottles. Others may be hikers or adventurers that may need to use this purifying water bottle to survive on natural water sources.

When you are reading each of these reviews, you will see that they all have different filter types, sizes, materials, durability, and finally, they all have different places where they work best.

Once you’ve answered this, now we need to get into the technical side of each water bottle and discover why some features may be better for hikers while other features may be best for travelers or everyday use.

Size and Weight

This may appear to be a simple thing, how much water can the self-filtering water bottle hold? Well, this is an important step in deciding which of these water bottles is best for you and your situation. A ton of different people will have different answers for this, but figuring out what is best for you is the most important.

Some people will assume that bigger is always better, but do you really need to be carrying around an extra 16 ounces of water when you’re simply just going for a walk around the neighborhood? Luckily, we’re to help you choose the size.

With bottles ranging in size from 16 ounces all the way past 30 ounces and you’ve probably figured out that the more volume of water the bottle holds, the heavier that bottle will be. But one thing people fail to look at is how much the bottle weighs when it is empty.

A fully metal construction water bottle can weigh over a pound with the filter, cap, and other features. While this may be acceptable if you just want to keep the bottle in your car all day but if I am carrying around my water bottle, having a 2-pound bottle is not ideal.

At the end of the day, when it comes to capacity and weight, find something you’re comfortable carrying with you, attaching to a bag, or keeping on your desk, just remember, each of these uses is different, and you’ll want to find something is not a burden.

Filter Capability

After going through or amazing list of the best filtering water bottles, I am sure that you’ve realized that not all filters are identical. Some were designed to clean out tap water contaminants, while others were designed to remove bacteria and heavy metals from a variety of different water sources. Again, it comes down to what YOU want to get out of the purification water bottle.

For all you hikers, campers and adventurers out there, you may run into the situation where you need to drink or cook with natural water. This could be a lake, pond, river, ocean, or rainwater collection, and who knows what sort of organisms are swimming around in there.

Finding a filtering water bottle that can remove high levels of protozoa, bacteria, and water-based viruses are probably the best bet for you. If you’re looking at a water bottle that is graded to remove chlorine and odors associated with it, you may want to think again.

On the other side, if you are like me and basically live on airplanes and in hotels, saving money by using a self-filtering water bottle is very smart. However, you may not need a massive 4-stage filter to get the best results for you. There are several options that are best for removing basic tap water contaminants in you would not need the higher cost associated with the higher-rated filters.

Lastly, many of us live in rural areas where our water source may be well. Water that originates from a well is typically higher in metallic elements like lead and iron. Some of the self-filtering water bottles are better at removing these types of harmful contaminants than others. You may want to look at these to give yourself some peace of mind that you can drink clean water with the help of a simple water bottle.

How Often Am I Going to Use It?

Another hugely important question you need to answer, is how much am I going to use this purifying filtered water bottle? There are several reasons that this should weigh into your decision, but the most important reason to most is the cost associated with the filters.

Some filters are more expensive and more difficult to replace within a water bottle. If you are going to be using this water bottle every single day along with the filter, having a filter life of just a few months does not make too much sense.

I know a ton of people that bring a self-filtering water bottle to the office with them every day. They just like having the feeling of crisp, fresh water with them everywhere they go. I usually suggest getting a longer-lasting filter.

On the other side of the equation, for folks that are looking for something on their hikes or expeditions, bringing something with a smaller filter life is not that big of a deal. They typically use it for 2-3 days and then will need it again in another month or so. For these types of people, spending the money on a highly rated filter may not make the most sense.

Conclusion

I know there is a ton of information being thrown at you, and I am sure it is all overwhelming. One thing to never forget when deciding on something like this is that it is an investment. With anything else you probably buy, you do the research and figure out all the things you want out of a self-purifying water bottle.

There so many options, and water filtering technology are always evolving. Take the information you’ve learned from this article and find which bottle suits you best. Remember, there is no right or wrong answer here, only the right answer for yourself.

Whether you are looking to get easy drinking water from your home, travel throughout the Amazon, or are a weekend hiker, there is an option for everyone here. We sincerely hope that this article has taught you everything you need to decide which self-filtering bottle is the right one for you.
